How To Customize Your Paypal Checkout Page

It really is the ‘little’ things that matter in business. I’m always looking at my sales funnel wondering “how can I improve conversions?”

Recently I noticed that I was getting a lot of people clicking on the ‘buy’ button but then not going through with the order. I looked at my order page and could see the problem… it was too generic. I use PayPal as my payment processor and the order page looks just like EVERY other PayPal order page.

At the same time I was looking at what other successful Internet marketers had set up for when someone clicked on their buy buttons. All of them had customized checkout pages, with the main benefits of the product that was to be purchased and testimonials.

Unfortunately, with PayPal you cannot create a fully customized checkout page, BUT you can at least customize your PayPal checkout page with your own banners. Here’s what I’m talking about:

PayPal Customized Checkout Page

You can see at the top of my page my own banner is there. This simple banner didn’t take long to create (with GIMP) and since going online, my conversion rate has increased substantially.

How do you customize your PayPal checkout page? I’m glad you asked! Here’s how:

  • Log in to your PayPal account and go to Profile
  • Go to My Selling Tools > Custom Payment Pages > Update
  • This will bring you to the ‘Customize Your Payment Page‘ page. Click on the ‘Add‘ button to create a new page
  • Add a header and logo image and choose header and background colors that match your website.
  • Click on the ‘Preview‘ button to see what your customized PayPal checkout page will look like when it is live
  • Click on the ‘Save‘ button when you’re happy with the layout
  • Make your new page your primary page selecting the radio button next to it and clicking on the ‘Primary‘ button.

If you’re using PayPal as your payment processor, I highly recommend that you create a customized PayPal checkout page right now!

  1. Hi John,

Great tip! That’s really interesting that such a simple thing can make so much difference to the conversion rate.. I’m going to do this also 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!

    Best, Steve

  2. This is one of those things that I keep saying I am going to do, but i never seem to get around to it. Thanks for the reminder and the how-to.

Curious though, can you make more than one checkout page? i have several things running through my PP account, so I need different checkouts for each. Maybe this is why I haven’t do it yet?

Your right though, it can make a difference and improve conversions.
