Helping My Brother To Make His First Dollar Online

My brother has always had an interest in the way I make a living online. During my stay in Sydney last week, he asked me to spend some time with him to show him how I do it.

Now, you need to understand that my brother is not very computer literate. So, when I thought of how I could best help him to make some money online I knew I needed to come up with something really simple but effective.

Also, I wanted a system that would not cost him anything.

I decided that blogging would be the best way to go.

This is what we did:

First, we set up a free account at Blogger. I chose Blogger because it is free, simple to set up, and it has many modules that make monetization easy.

Another reason I chose Blogger is because it may be more SEO friendly than WordPress‘ free blogs. For example, if you do a search for the ultra-competitive phrase “make money online”, you will notice that at least 2 out of the top 5 results are Blogger blogs (at least at the time of writing this post).

Next, I showed him how to write new posts to his blog.

Third, to monetize his blog we set up Adsense. Within Blogger, you can add modules, and one of them is Adsense. When you do this you will be asked to set up a new Adsense account. This is easy to do and only takes a few minutes.

After you’ve setup your Adsense account, you’ll be asked where you would like to place the ads. Accept the default configuration.

That’s it!

He was surprised at how easy it is to make money online and now that he understands how it works, he’s quite motivated.

I told him that all he needed to do was write a short post every day about anything in his life that he found interesting; a movie he watched, something that happened at work, anything!

Also, the title of his posts should be an accurate description of what he is writing about and something that people would search for.

The more he writes about, the more money he’ll make. It’s that simple.

  1. Hello. Come on now – it’s not that simple. (All one has to do is look at my blog – unfinished – because I can’t seem to grasp the widgets/headers/meta tags/ and on and on.)

Did you help him set up all those little things? How do you think it’s possible that he can make money with that blog? ( Honestly, not trying to be critical but could you explain in a bit more detail?)

I and – and probably many others would love to hear what you have to say. Good post – as far as inspiring – but could you elaborate?
Sometimes the simplicity of thinking (like you outlined here) is where to start – but hey – maybe you can start sending us a weekly or 2x per week update on what you showed your brother – to help his blog and make money. Would love to see that series of emails. Where would I sign up?

Again – inspiring, but need more – need more :))

PS – If you do that – can you email me at leadticket@gmail.com so I can follow you? Thanks! I just recently found you so – not up to date on all you do yet.

And John – one more thing – do you think setting up a Blogger blog – as far as all the widgets, etc that need to be added – the tags, plug-ins, etc…. – is easier than WordPress as well? I know you said that the setup is easier – but is the rest of the widgety things easier as well? Ok- hope to hear from you!

  2. Hi Susan,

Thank you for reading my blog post and for taking the time to leave such a comprehensive comment!

I know what it’s like to set up a WordPress blog… I’ve done quite a few now and it is daunting. That’s why I decided to go with Blogger for my brother’s first blog. If you haven’t already, sign up for a free Blogger account and have a quick look. It really is super user-friendly!

Even though the post is quite brief, there really was nothing else that I did do to set up my brother’s blog. It literally took minutes to set up. Sure, you can customize the blog with some widgets here and there but you don’t need to with Blogger.

You also need to remember that my brother is not very computer literate. I wanted to keep it as simple for him as possible. As time goes by and he gains more experience, he can move on to WordPress.

Can he make money with his Blogger blog? Yes! It’s all about content. The more you post (and especially if you do it regularly, i.e. daily), the more traffic you’ll get. Just make sure your headings and tags are relevant to your content.

Also, don’t try to target competitive keyword phrases like “make money online” or “credit card comparisons”. You’ll be wasting your time and effort.

    Best regards,

    John

P.S. I checked out your blog and it was different from what I was expecting based on your description of it! Yes, it may be a little bare but it has a very clean, professional look.

  3. Hello John,
Thanks for sharing such nice information.
I do agree with you, for a complete newbie, you need as easiest technical as possible. I also choose Blogger.com with the same reason.
I might move to WordPress when I’m better. For driving traffic or other techniques to get the blog out there, your brother need to learn from time-to-time. I guess his next step will be writing articles, since he can do the post he can do the article writing as well.
Please continue with your post, I’ll be following.
Hope you don’t mind my poor English and if you have some free times please kindly give comment about my blog.
    Once again thank you…

  4. Cool , even i have blogger powered blog , its more SEO optimized than wordpress but it needs to be tweaked a lot as it has very less themes meanwhile wp has many premium themes and plugins readily available while in blogger , we nned to implement many html snippets , codes and many other things ;D

  5. Thanks for this information. It will sure be useful to a newbie who wants to try blogging to earn money online. I personally think a self hosted wordpress blog is the way to go to earn from blogging. You have more control over plugins. It is also important to choose good targeted keywords to rank on the first page of google.

  6. Man this sounds so extremely easy. thank you so much for sharing it with all of us. It’s so easy to get bogged down with the whole driving traffic stuff, but really if you just keep writing excellent posts, the traffic will come. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
