A few weeks ago, I got this message from a good friend of mine and joint venture partner. Things weren’t going well with his email marketing business, in fact, he was struggling.
Here’s what he said:
“Can I ask you a few questions? You are full time online, right? I’m getting to the point where I’m struggling a little bit – looking for a mentor I guess you might say.
“For some reason my clicks have gone down, sales down, I’m not sure what I am doing wrong. Whenever I send out a promotion these days , no one buys anything.
“How about you? If you send out a legit Clickbank offer are people buying?
“Thanks so much 🙂

Here’s my response:
Yes, I do this full-time. Haven’t got it down to a fine art yet, but I’m working on it.
What I like to do is model other successful email marketers, like Mike Filsaime, Frank Kern, Jason Fladlien, etc.
Here’s some things I do that may help:
- Organise a new adswap for every day of the week (I do 6 a week – nothing on Sundays)
- Make sure you don’t swap with the same partner more frequently than once every 2 months (otherwise you’ll get the same leads)
- Chose only relevant adswap offers and partners that I know will match clicks within 20%. Follow up with all partners after swaps and make sure I match clicks for bigger swap partners
- Write your own ad copy. Don’t use your partner’s swipe
- Promote the free offer as best you can… don’t use generic messages or subject lines like “Your free gift” or deceptive tactics like “Paypal receipt number…” etc
- Mailout same time every day
- Promote a second product under your adswap mailout. I like to promote affiliate products that I know convert well
- Promote as many good-converting RECURRING billing products as you can
- Try NOT to promote Clickbank products. Many of your subscribers will buy through their own links anyway and the refund rates can be high
- Offer bonuses for those that buy through your link
- Send your list a free gift or free training every now and again that they don’t have to optin for
- The more they see and hear you give valuable advice the better. They come to trust and like you and will buy from you
- Have a separate list from your adswap list. These are leads that you’ve got through your own seo efforts, etc. They are more responsive and you don’t have to bombard them with adswap offers every day
- Work on building up your own source of traffic to build this separate list. Create Youtube videos, keep a blog, write articles, etc
- Keep up to date with new launches on JV Notify Pro and promote only the good ones to your list
- Only promote good products at all times… no matter how much money you can make (e.g. I didn’t promote Adeel Chowdhry’s Go Click Cash – the guy presenting it was an obvious phony – but I’m sure it converted really well)
- Set up a good one-time offer and back one-time offer
- In the first follow up email (where they get their download link) have the oto offer available via a special link that expires in 24 hours (there’s free scripts for this)
- On your thank you page and download page, have banner ads to a few affiliate offers.. the ones that convert best
- Set up an affiliate program where you give your jvs 75-100% of your otos
- Set up your own $97 product (offer jvs 50-75%) – I’m almost finished doing this now
- Try to sell big-ticket items, like mentoring. It’s much easier to make one $2,000 sale than fifty $40 sales 🙂
- Always try to improve on the conversions of your squeeze page. Very important
That’s about all I can think of for now.
This advice helped my friend, and I hope it has helped you too 🙂
.
Hey John,
I could not really add anything to this list, you must have spent quite a lot of time writing this!
And by the way, you mentioned that you are creating a $97 product. Could you reveal what will it be about? 🙂
Matt Poc
Hi Matt, the $97 product will be a customized list building site and sales funnel package. It will help those that are new online to get started quickly in building a list and making profits.
I wish someone had set one up for me when I first started out… it took me 6 months just to get mine up and running, and it didn’t even convert that well!
Hi John,
Thank you for posting this information. This is exactly what I am looking for. I am writing down the tips that you have shared here.
Hi John,
Nice email marketing tips. You have pointed out the best strategies to succeed in it. Thanks for the tips. I will remember this pointers when I get to start my own campaign. For now, I just have to understand the subject better.
