Google Analytics WordPress?

December 1, 2010

Google Analytics WordPress is a must-have plugin for your WordPress blog. It’s free, very easy to install and will give you information that you can use to grow your business in the right direction.

Installing Google Analytics WordPress

To install Google Analytics for WordPress, you will first need to sign up for a free Google Analytics account. You can do that here:

http://www.google.com/analytics/

Once your logged into your account, click on the Add Website Profile link towards the bottom left-hand corner of the page.

Make sure ‘Add a Profile for a new domain’ is selected and type in your domain name in the field provided.

Click the ‘Finish’ button.

You’ll now be presented with a unique Tracking Code for your domain. It will be in a format similar to this:

UA-xxxxxxxx-xx

Copy this tracking code.

Next, log on to the WordPress Dashboard for your domain and go to the Plugins > Add New menu (left-hand side of the page).

In the ‘Search’ section, make sure that ‘Term’ is selected from the drop-down list, type in ‘google analytics for wordpress’ in the field provided and click Search Plugins.

Your first result should be ‘Google Analytics for WordPress’. This is the plugin that you will want to install. To install it simply click on the ‘Install Now‘ link and activate the plugin when prompted.

On your WordPress Dashboard, in the left-hand menu you should see a new entry under Settings called Google Analytics. Click on this link.

There will a checkbox that reads ‘Manually enter your UA code’. Tick this checkbox and paste the tracking code that we copied earlier from the Google Analytics website.

Click on the ‘Update Google Analytics Settings’ button to save the changes.

Congratulations, you’ve successfully installed Google Analytics for WordPress.

Monitoring Google Analytics WordPress

Now that you’ve installed the Google Analytics for WordPress plugin, you can login to the Google Analytics site whenever you like and check all the statistics from your blog.

Google Analytics records everything you could ever want to know, including:

  • how visitors came to your site
  • what those visitors are doing on your site
  • which pages your visitors are leaving your site from
  • how long the average visitor is on your site for
  • which keywords are bringing in organic search engine traffic

That last point is very important. By knowing which keywords are bringing in the most traffic to your site, you can create even more content based on those keywords, or more backlinks to those pages/posts to strengthen their search engine ranking.
